SHE WAS GOING TO FAINT for the first time in her life. That was all there was to it, Maggie decided five days later. In just twenty minutes Walter was going to let five people who knew about the situation into the house, and they were all going to try and sit down and have a sophisticated dinner party. Only, the guest of honor wasn’t going to make it because she was going to be passed out on the floor, brought low by such a tremendous bout of nerves that she couldn’t eat, couldn’t speak and she certainly couldn’t move. She was going to let Ethan down.

Lord, she needed a stick of gum. Just one. For courage.

Just then a soft tapping sounded at her door. “Maggie, are you all right?”

She closed her eyes. Ethan. And he would gaze at her with those gorgeous silver eyes. She’d look up into eyes, register that understanding look of his and feel like the biggest jerk of all time. Other women wouldn’t fail him like this. Other women would know just what to do. If she were Ariel or someone like her, she wouldn’t be apologizing for not being able to do something as simple as preside over a dinner. No, she’d be presiding over Ethan’s bed and he’d be teaching her how to make love instead of how to walk and talk and eat and curtsy. As if Ethan would ever think of doing that with someone like her.

But the image of a shirtless Ethan in her bed had already been hatched.

“Come in,” she said faintly.

In a black suit that showed off his broad shoulders and his startlingly good looks, he was just as she’d envisioned him, only better. More tempting.

“Are they here already?” she managed to ask.

“Almost, but that’s not what I’m here for.”

That made her brain kick in. “I don’t understand.”

He smiled. “You know how I’ve been pushing you lately?”

“Oh, you haven’t pushed,” she began.

“I’ve pushed,” he said forcefully. Okay, they had set a somewhat frenzied pace for their lessons. In the past few days they had concentrated on dance lessons, etiquette, titles of the rich and famous, how to handle a receiving line, how to lead a discussion so that no one felt left out, how to eliminate the flatness of her Midwestern accent and how to enter and leave a room.

The only thing they never had gotten to was that business about wine. She’d been so fascinated by the assortment of cutlery and the Bennington china that Ethan had let her play tea party and the wine had been forgotten. Tonight they would introduce that part of the curriculum, but she didn’t want to think about that. Besides, Ethan was looking rather speculative.

“All right, you pushed a little,” she agreed just to prompt him to continue.

“I pushed a lot,” he said, insisting on making himself into an ogre. “And you, my lady, have been an angel of patience and a miracle of a student. For all your hard work and time and attention you’ve gotten nothing for yourself.
